You may or may not have heard this before, but your skin is your largest organ. Our skin can tell us what’s going on internally, if we listen. There are many skin conditions that pop up that are actually a cry for help for inside your body. Things such as acne, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, and the list goes on (sadly).
If you’ve ever had a skin issue before…it’s the worst. It’s so uncomfortable to have something happening with your skin, especially if visiable, such as on your face or hands. The hardest part about it is you can’t necessarily hide it when it’s out and about on your skin, but we don’t want to hide it…we want to fix it!
However, when a skin issue comes up, people tend to reach for things ONLY for the skin. Often times these are products that can cost a lot of money and can be filled with more toxic chemicals burdening your liver and lymphatic system. But I am here to share, or remind you, that you have to look inward and focus on your internal environment first.
Our body whispers to us before it screams. You may notice a dry patch of skin that was never there before. You may notice a change in your skin texture. Maybe itchy areas or redness. These are all whispers that you need to take a closer look at supporting your liver and lymphatic systems to support glowing skin.
Detoxing, The Holistic Way
Your body is already extremely intelligent. Every single day your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and your skin work together to filter, neutralize, and eliminate what you do not need.
When things such as stress, processed foods, and environmental toxins build up in your body systems, or when we transition to a new season, those systems need a little extra love. Think of it less of “detoxing” and more as creating space for your body to be in balance (homeostasis).
A supported detox system means:
Clearer, more radiant skin
Better digestion and energy
Fewer headaches and hormonal swings
A calmer and more grounded nervous system
When your liver and lymph flow freely and optimally, your glow naturally returns without any harsh chemicals or detoxification.
The Skin-Liver Connection
Your skin is one of your body’s main detox organs by eliminating through sweat and sebum. But if your liver, which is your MAIN detox organ, is overworked (which in our day and age it probably is), toxins can get pushed out of the skin instead which can lead to dullness, breakouts, and irritation.
Therefore, supporting your liver helps lighten the load. You’ll notice brighter skin, more even skin tone, and “lit from within” vibe that comes with true internal balance.
Gentle Ways to Support your Detox Pathways
Let’s get to the goods, the meat and potato, of this post. Here are some simple yet effective ways to help your body do what it does best without deprivation or stress:
Eat for the Season
Fall (whole) foods are naturally detox-friendly! Foods such as:
Beets support the liver function
Cruciferous vegetables (ex. Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage) to help process hormones
Apples & pears for fibre and gentle cleansing
Warming spices like ginger and cinnamon to boost circulation
Focus on cooked, grounding meals: soups, stews, roasted veggies, as these will assist your digestion in stying strong as the temps drop.
Get your Lymph Moving
Your lymphatic system does NOT have a pump like your heart does. Therefore it relies on movement and hydration to flow. Practice things such as:
Gentle yoga, walking, rebounding, and dancing to help move your lymph
Try dry brushing (get yours here) before showers to stimulate flow
Stay hydrated and aim for room temperature water or herbal teas such as: nettle, dandelion, or red clover
Pro Tip: 5-10 minute legs-up-the-wall pose helps lymph drain AND calms your nervous system 🤌🏼.
Support your Liver Naturally
Guess what? Your liver LOVES minerals and nutrients NOT stress…
Start your morning with warm lemon water to support digestion, hydration, and detoxification (add some sea salt for better absorption and added minerals)
Incorporate bitter greens into your diet such as: arugula, endive, or dandelion
Limit/avoid alcohol and processed foods/oils as these burden your detox pathways
Do castor oil packs on your liver at night *consult your primary health care practitioner to see if this is right for you first
- I use this castor oil
Get enough sleep because your liver does most of its repair while you get them zzz’s (Also, have your last meal/food at least 2 hours before bed to further support this process!)
4. Ground yourself Daily
Detoxing isn’t just physical, it’s actually emotional and energetic too!
So, like it or not, you have to make space for journaling, breathwork, and/or meditation (obviously all 3 would be the triple threat and the ideal, but I know that’s not available for everyone everyday).
Choose to work on letting go of what no longer serves you, such as: old stories, habits, and expectations. Some ways to do this: EFT tapping, breathwork, somatic healing, fascia release, seeing an EMDR therapist, art therapy, and more!
Reflection Prompt: What am I ready to release so I can move into the next season lighter & brighter?
The Glow from Within 💫
So, here is the final wrap up. True radiance isn’t found in a product. It is the by product of inner balance. When your body feels supported, your skin will reflect it. When your nervous system is calm, your digestion steady, and your energy grounded, your natural glow will absolutely shine through.
So this fall season, instead of doing more, try supporting what’s already working for you. Root down, nourish deeply, and let your glow grow from the inside out.
Peace, love, & organic avocados,
Katie
xoxo
